About
One research and development company, shared across the group, so every Thunder Industries venture has experimental engineering behind it from day one.
Caldera Ord 9 exists to take ambitious ideas from concept to proven technology.
Every Thunder Industries venture eventually reaches a question its own team cannot answer from a desk: whether a mechanism will survive the duty cycle, which material holds up under the real thermal load, why a component that passed on the bench fails in service. Answering those questions well takes rigs, instrumentation, fabrication capability, and people who have run the experiment before.
Building that capability inside each company separately would mean building it badly four times over. CO9 is the alternative — a single R&D organisation that any Thunder Industries company can draw on, carrying its accumulated knowledge from one programme to the next.
Operating principles
Research is easy to spend money on and hard to hold accountable. These are the commitments that keep our output useful.
A result counts when it is measured, repeatable, and written down — not when it is argued convincingly.
The cheapest failure is the one found in an experiment designed to cause it. We look for them deliberately.
Prototypes exist to answer a question. Each one is built around the specific thing we need to find out.
One R&D organisation serving every Thunder Industries venture, so what is proven once does not need proving again.
Shared R&D model
The right shape depends on how much of the problem is already understood.

A time-boxed investigation aimed at one decision — a feasibility question, a material choice, a failure nobody can explain.
Access to CO9 rigs, instrumentation, and analysis for teams that have hardware and need it properly characterised.
Part of Thunder Industries
CO9 reports into Thunder Industries and serves the whole group. What one venture proves becomes available to the rest — the reason the R&D function sits in one place rather than being duplicated across every company.
Thunder IndustriesWhere to go
We are the group’s R&D company, not an outside consultancy. New ventures and general questions start with Thunder Industries; programmes already running go through your Caldera contact or your Thunder Industries manager.
